New Zep MicroSolve™ Kills Harmful Microorganisms on Food Contact Surfaces
ATLANTA (DATE) – The food industry now has a new weapon in the fight against Listeria, E. coli, Salmonella and other pathogenic microorganisms. The chemistry in new Zep MicroSolve™ Disinfectant Cleaner is the only chemistry EPA-registered to disinfect and remove biofilms on food-contact and non-food-contact surfaces including equipment, walls, floors and drains. It works without the need for labor-intensive scrubbing as is common with other chemical cleaners.
Microorganisms that can cause foodborne illnesses form dangerous, protective biofilms in wet environments like food processing and food service facilities. Without removing the biofilm matrix, it is impossible to kill the pathogens embedded in it.
“MicroSolve is an effective part of a comprehensive facility sanitation program,” explains Philip Bouchard, Product Marketing Manager-Food, Zep Inc. “It’s most effective when used as a weekly preventive maintenance strategy but also can be used to deeply disinfect a facility after a microbial contamination problem or outbreak.”
When biofilms persist in damp areas like nooks and crannies in floors, walls, tables and equipment, they become resistant to chemical and heat treatment. While regular facility sanitation can eliminate many of these microorganisms, the pathogens can flourish in hard-to-reach areas.
Zep MicroSolve has advantages over typical disinfectants, which are not effective against typical pathogens in biofilms. It attacks the biofilm, penetrating and removing it while acting as a bactericide, slimicide and algicide.
The product is easy to mix and use. It may be applied as a foam or liquid and is “self-scrubbing” when activated, eliminating the need to manually scrub surfaces, thus reducing labor time and costs. It rinses off easily. Zep supplies manual and air-operated foamers to apply the product, which is available in 5 gallon and 55 gallon drums.
“The foaming action of MicroSolve™ allows for an extended contact time with surfaces, which is necessary for an effective removal of biofilms,” adds Bouchard. “In addition, the foam provides visual evidence of full-surface coverage, which in turn, guarantees a complete removal of the biofilm from the surface including from hard-to-reach areas. Moreover, MicroSolve can be used to keep Clean-In-Place systems free of biofilms and pathogenic microorganisms.”
